Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. Each aligner is slightly different than the next in its shape. They are custom-made for your teeth and are meant to be switched out approximately every two to three weeks.
How does Invisalign work?
The constant shifting of the position of the teeth works to shift the teeth into a straighter position. The aligners must be worn at least 22 hours daily to be effective. They can be removed to eat or brush. However, they must be worn when sleeping to affect the movement of the teeth. The treatment time varies based on the current position of the teeth and how much they need to be moved.
The average treatment time for a patient is one year or less. However, the outcome of treatment can vary from person to person. During your consultation, your dentist can give you a better idea of how long you are expected to wear your aligners, as well as an estimated outcome of the treatment.
A significant perk of using Invisalign is that the aligners are virtually invisible and do not stand out the way traditional metal braces do. They are also removable, which makes eating and cleaning your teeth much easier. Since they are made out of a clear material, they do not irritate the gums like traditional braces often do. Additionally, since they are removable, they do not need to be adjusted by the orthodontist as often, which can cut down on visits to the dentist.
How is Invisalign different from braces?
Traditional metal and ceramic braces use brackets and wires to align teeth. Invisalign aligners, on the other hand, are custom-made, clear trays that snap on over your teeth and gently guide them into place over time. Clear aligners aren’t just subtler than braces, and they’re also less painful. Since there are no metal or wire components that can poke the inside of your lips or cheeks, you’re less likely to experience discomfort from your appliances.
Also, you can remove your aligner whenever you want. That makes it easy to eat whatever you like without worrying about food restrictions. Traditional braces also require more maintenance. You’ll need to brush around your brackets after every meal to make sure food particles don’t get caught there and lead to decay. With clear braces, you’ll simply remove your appliance to participate in all your favorite activities.
Is Invisalign right for me?
The aligners are removable, so you can take them out to eat and drink what you want during treatment. And you can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would for fresh breath and good oral hygiene.
For the best results, you should wear your retainers as directed. Not wearing your retainer can lead to shifting teeth and potentially ruin your results. Remember to remove your retainer before brushing, and brush both the inside and outside of the retainer before placing it back in your mouth. When not in use, place your retainer in its case and keep it away from pets or children.
